Summary

Having worked in the IT industry for over 15 years I have enjoyed many challenging roles including IT team leader, project management, design, systems rationalisation and various support roles. I have vast experience of Unix systems administration and Internet technologies. I have attained many skills technically, in written and oral communications and in business practices.

 

I have enjoyed contract work since 1996 because of its varied and challenging nature. Monitoring, maintenance and admin of BAU systems running on a wide variety of Sun and Fujitsu hardware ranging from T2000 and M5000 to enterprise systems on F15Ks with Solaris 8, 9 and 10 with EMC SAN. Virtualisation of the servers using Hardware Domains and LDOMs.

 

Support and on-call for all the existing Unix legacy systems and then for the new estate and products detailed. Working in a team of ten, I was on a 24 x 7 support rota.

 

EDS (Ahold Netherlands)                                   Systems Administrator / Project Admin  January 2007 – November 2007

Migrating the customers DMZ and Exposed zone systems (43 servers) from the Ahold head office in Amsterdam to EDS datacenters in Frankfurt. The new hardware was Sun T2000s using Solaris 10 and IBM p520s with AIX 5.3. To maximize the hardware usage virtual servers were created in containers using Solaris and zones and AIX LPARs.

 

The project involved designing the solutions, specifying hardware, planning disk requirements and ensuring the applications would port to the new platforms as well as hardware configuration, application installation and data migration, through to go-live.

 

On the new Sun T2000Õs I helped to build, install and configure the Solaris 10 operating system and then migrate the applications over to the new servers. This included configuring and partitioning the allocated EMC SAN storage, creating 3-5 virtual environments on each T200 with zoneadm and manually editing the zone xml files to configure the multiple network interfaces, then copying or installing the applications onto their new zones.

 

Portman Building Society                     Systems Administrator                          January 2006 - December 2006

Infrastructure replacement project – Design and upgrade Sun infrastructure with E2900s and V series servers and NetApp FAS3000 disks utilizing snap and clone technology extensively. Working with the Summit / Activate mortgage and InformEnt data warehouse applications Portman upgraded to Solaris 9 and Oracle 9i along with updating the hardware. Installation, configuration and administration of NetBackup 6.0, with NDMP and NOM. Configuration and testing of Solaris, NDMP and Windows client backup policies.

 

The project involved designing the solutions, specifying hardware, planning disk requirements and ensuring the applications would port to the new solution as well as hardware configuration application installation and data migration, through to go-live and post live support, defining escalation procedures and training the computer operations staff on the new systems.

 

Monitoring, maintenance and admin of General Ledger system based on RedHat Linux AS3 and NFS presented NetApp disks.

Scout leader, dinghy racing, windsurfing and mountain biking                         July 2005 – December 2005

Planned time off - I joined a local Explorer Scout unit (14 -18 year olds) as assistant leader. My leadership experience was tested with a challenging age group as we undertake the many and varied activities that Scouting offers. I was formally a leader in a Venture Scout unit (16 -20 year olds) for 15 years.  I enjoyed a summer of Dart 18 racing, finishing 12th (out of 37) in the Parkstone Summer series and 8th in the winter series, whilst making the most of quality family time. I mountain biked frequently and windsurfed whenever the wind was strong.

 

IBM UK Ltd                                           System Administrator / Team Leader      November 2003 - June 2005
Working on the mmO2 project I was leading a team of 4, including one off-shore (in India). Duties included organising workloads, support rotas, resource scheduling, escalation and general administration. My technical duties included installing and configuring development, test and production servers,
administering AIX 5.1 and  Solaris 8 systems, installing critical and security patches, installing and configuring the telecoms software and middleware and basic Oracle database administration.

 

I was on the on-call rota providing 24 x 7 support and upgrades for the production servers on a one week in three rota.

 

The technology used was Solaris 8 with Veritas clustering and AIX 5.1 with some HP-UX, I was installing and maintaining telecoms solutions including Comptel mediation, Smarttrust CMS and Metasolv ASAP software using Oracle 9i for the database solution and WebSphere Application Server, MQ and WebLogic as the delivery platform.

Companies House (Civil Service)                      Systems Administrator                          February 2003 – October 2003

Return following contract in 2001-2002. Systems administration with acceptance testing, documentation and monitoring on the new business critical systems comprising of two SunFire6800 4 node clusters running Sun Cluster 3.0 and two StorEdge 6960 T3 SANs running Sun Volume Manager (DiskSuite). Acceptance testing and security review of SunFire systems running Solaris 8. All systems are using IPMP on gigabit Ethernet and FC-AL fabric networks.

 

Installation and configuration of SSH, Apache, BEA WebLogic 7 and Staffware i9 linking into Oracle 9i. Set-up of end to end process throughput allowing the software products to interact with each other. Administering AIX 4.3.3 and  Solaris 8 systems on SunFire servers installing patches, whilst planning and upgrading from Solaris 2.6 to 8.

 

Blitz Communications                          IT Team Leader                                                 June 2002 - October 2002

Contracted to restore the systems to stable and reliable operation. The company had virus attacks and systems were miss-managed resulting in business critical servers becoming corrupted. The backups were incomplete resulting in a loss of data and a loss of confidence from the users. Due to the problems the users were experiencing several outages per day and were unable to work whilst the core systems were down, resulting in lost business.

 

Reporting to the directors I was leading team of 4. During the contract my problem solving and crisis management skills were extensively used. I completed a full review of the company wide infrastructure. Proposals were presented to the directors then implemented to improve system reliability, performance and availability. Responsible for the recruitment of a new permanent  IT manager, windows technical support and specialist contractors.

 

Whilst managing the department I was also hands on and technically I completed the following. Implementation of external virus scanning. Administration of Windows NT and 2000 servers and Exchange 5.5. Proposal, installation and management of the Veritas Backup Exec solution to provide an all encompassing backup strategy. Organizing the full rollout of Trend anti-virus products to all server and desk top machines. Administration of the thin-client cluster network to. System administration of the Sun Solaris 8 servers running Oracle 8i.

Clear Channel Communications                        Systems Administration and Internet     January 2002 – March 2002

Covering staff shortages following previous contract in 2000. Managing Solaris 2.6, 7 and 8 systems on Sun hardware from Netra to E4500 and RedHat Linux 7.2 on Dell PCÕs. Responsible for the implementation of three new DNS servers using BIND 9.2.0 and SSH, upgrade of critical software and increasing the security on all Unix servers. Setup of anonymous FTP server. Configuration and maintenance of Netscape proxy server v2.0. Managing the upgrade of Solstice Backup Manager (Legato) from 5.1 to 6.1 with a DLT8000 autoloader.

Review of server status. Reporting on performance monitoring and testing, backups, security, availability, patches and operating system levels. Managing the project to upgrade the major servers to ensure performance was good and service levels were reliably achieved. Disaster recovery review. Testing of procedures and recovery from backups on the IBM AIX systems and the Sun Solaris servers running DiskSuite. Investigation into the nature and threat of Unix viruses.

Managing Solaris 7 and 8 systems I was responsible for the installation, set-up, configuration and administration of 80 servers including problem diagnosis and resolution. Responsible for the installation of BMC Patrol and systems monitoring, configuration of the NTP timeserver and DNS, (internally and for clients). I was involved Veritas backups, installing client software and testing disaster recovery. Creation and maintenance of shell scripts in Korn and Bourne shells.

I completed the preliminary work on a security project investigating the current set-up of the systems, then producing recommendations for the enhancement of security. Areas covered included the inetd configuration, start up procedures and services running. Logging of events and increasing the systems logging, secure backups, system auditing and restricting access.

Managing Sun Solaris 2.5, 2.6 and 7 systems alongside Linux Mandrake systems. I was responsible for the set-up, configuration and administration of all the Unix systems. I also configured and maintained the web sites running on Windows NT using IIS4. Recruitment of new staff.

 

Solaris tasks included; Tuning and configuration of systems to ensure reliable shutdown and start up. Installation of Solstice (Legato) 5.1 backup suite and configuration to run overnight network backup of multiple clients. Network configuration and optimization. DNS administration and upgrade of BIND. Installation and configuration of Netscape proxy server 2.0. Installation of Sun license server 5.0. Setup of anonymous FTP.

Infrastructure review. Recommending improvements for server utilization and performance, consolidation and optimization of servers to reduce on-going costs. Security review to ensure required servers were protected by the firewall.  Virus checking review to ensure company was protected from email attacks.
Web maintenance. Management of Internet Information Server 4 (IIS4) for the corporate intranet and Internet.

Project Management. I ran the project from inception to completion to update the internal DNS server with three new DNS servers, whilst ensuring that the internal sub-domains were all incorporated correctly into the new structure. I was solely responsible for the set-up, configuration and installation of the three new HP-UX 10.20 servers. Project completed on time and within budget.

Covering all areas of their intranet I was running the telephone help desk, and training the regional help desk personnel.

 

IBM UK Ltd                                           Administrator - Internet systems                        March 1996 - March 1997

Working in the OpenNet ( Internet ) department I was responsible for the setup and administration of AIX based Internet machines, including DNS servers, firewalls using IBM secure network gateway ( SNG ), proxy and news servers. Created  HTML and CGI scripts.

 

Technical support (3rd level), diagnosing internal IBM and customer problems. This would include hardware faults, connectivity issues, and configuration problems.

Implementation.  I would design the communication system, write proposals and then would procure the hardware and software.
